Fernwood Garden Center: Columbia’s landscaping headquarters

While people are spending more time at home due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the landscaping industry is seeing a surge in business as more people are working in their yards. Be it putting down mulch, planting some flowers or tending to a home garden, Maury countians are making their idle hands green this spring and many are turning to one of Columbia’s oldest businesses for help to do so.

Celebrating their 28th year of business this July, Fernwood Garden Center is in the business of making things grow. Starting as a wholesale grower of ferns and mums, Fernwood offers home grown plants at their open-air market location on North James Campbell Blvd. In 2008, a shift in their business model led them to becoming the premier landscape and garden center for the community that they are today.

“In 08 when the recession hit, things changed a lot in the plant world” said Connie Everett, owner of Fernwood Garden Center. “We began to focus more on the market and expanding offerings here as opposed to the whole sale aspect of our business.”

The results have been great as Fernwood is a fixture in the local landscape scene. Working with businesses and individuals alike many local lawns are made prettier every year thanks to their products.

While so many are tackling their lawns themselves, many for the first time this year, many have questions. Luckily, Fernwood has a staff and a system that can help.

“We pride ourselves on our service here and we take it as our mission to be able to care for people as best as we can” said Everett. “We’ve worked to build a personal relationship with our customers and we even have some that have been with us since the very beginning.”

In addition to the hands-on service of speaking with the team, Fernwood also has their plant finder feature on their website that allows customers to both gather information on a variety of plant options and even find ideas that will work best for their lawn given a variety of topics.

“We added the plant finder feature last year and it is a huge help to anyone with plant needs” said Everett. “You can see varieties and colors of a particular plant along with a list of information on size and even how much sunlight would be best for the plant. It offers a ton of information and can even be used to create a wish list that can be brought in to help with the selecting of your new plant.”

Everett said that some of their most popular items include their bulk mulch and stone as well as their wide offerings for fertilizers and composts.

“We offer a wide range of bulk products and they are just a much better buy than buying in bags” said Everett. “We even offer delivery service on those items. So if you’re looking for a good mulch or composts to spruce up your yard this spring, we can help with that for sure.”
